InSync Software, Inc.

Over the past decade, dozens of young football players have died of heat-related injuries, and well over 10,000 have been rushed to emergency rooms for treatment of heat-related illness. InSync Software, together with its partner Hothead Technologies, has developed a life-saving application that combines the power of the cloud with the convenience of mobile devices, and runs on InSync’s award-winning iApp Application Cloud Platform. The iApp-powered Hothead Technologies solution mounts tiny wireless temperature sensors/transmitters inside football players’ helmets to monitor and report on players’ body temperature in real-time. Temperature data, along with the each player’s unique identity, is streamed in real-time to the cloud where several business rules are processed to establish if any player is "too hot" based on the player’s profile and medical history. Alerts are sent through push notifications to an iPhone or iPad device to the coach or other responsible authority when a player's temperature exceeds an established threshold. The coach can then pull the player off the field for evaluation and provide any needed medical attention immediately. Preemptive action can then be taken to avoid heat-related illness or even death. InSync has more recently expanded this solution to work on hardhats and to use other contact methods for the benefit of firefighters, public safety officers, oilfield and construction/industrial workers, and military personnel, and in sports such as auto racing, baseball, softball, basketball, and lacrosse.

txtWeb (http://www.txtweb.com/) is a two-side network effects platform (NEP) that enables content owners and producers such as educational websites, e-commerce companies, sports and entertainment content owners to reach 900 million mobile users in India without the need for an Internet connection. txtWeb is built from day-1 on the cloud technology stack using Amazon Web Services (AWS). We have scaled up the system using cloud technology and now offering the txtWeb platform to other businesses as an platform hosted in the cloud. Using txtWeb's platform, any business can SMS enabled their content or offering by leveraging the PaaS (Platform as a Service) model. The business opportunity for companies is to be able to allow their business and operational content to be accessed on the go without needing a smartphone. As an example, a Wikipedia app has been built on the platform, which allows anyone with a low end phone(costing around $30), to browse Wikipedia over SMS. Prior to txtWeb enabling this, these students would have to login to their computers or buy an expensive smartphone with a dataplan to do this. Any enterprise that wants it's employees to stay connected, acquire new customers and engage existing customer without mandating that they do so using a smartphone or internet connection would benefit. We expect most enterprises would have this pain point. Currently, txtWeb has more than a million monthly active users and around 4000 monthly active mobile apps. txtWeb is a true embodiment of a cloud based product that provides real value for enterprises. Project Description: The project brief was given by BP Ergo, a furniture company owned by the Piramal’s. The brief was to create an app for Interior Designers, Architects, Office Managers and Amateur enthusiasts which enabled them to customize furniture systems. While this concept has been explored on the web, it was a unique project because such apps for customizing products hasn’t been tackled on a large scale in India. Project Purpose: The purpose of this project was to enable users to visualize the various products offered by the client without having to physically see different customizations. Mobile technology allows users to take such an app to a client meeting and show them the various ways in which the furniture systems can be customized. Hence, the app’s primary purpose is to enable users to quickly visualize the several ways in which a furniture system can be customized by changing the materials and colors of the several parts of the furniture. Target audience: The app was targeted towards interior designers and architects who create office spaces. However, it is also aimed at Office Managers or other positions in a company which are responsible for designing the office space. User goals, challenges and painpoints... The major user goals were being able to quickly and intuitively complete the task of selecting a furniture system and customizing it by selecting individual parts, materials and colors. However, the challenge here was in making a touch based system intuitive to use. In India, gestures as an interaction pattern are new and people are not completely familiar or at ease with them. The major pain point that had to be tackled by the design is the inexperience of the users in using touch based applications. Also, since the screen size of most touch screens are under 10-7 inches, it became cumbersome for users to select individual components of a furniture at such small sizes. ...and how they were overcome To tackle the problem of unfamiliarity with gestures, we ensured that relevant feedback, affordances and help text were incorporated in the design. For example, in the main customization page, the users’ were first given an overview of the entire furniture and the ways in which it could be customized. Similarly, the affordances given to the various buttons and action items ensured that the users knew how to proceed in that context. The problem of small screen size was overcome by letting the users select individual components of the furniture by either clicking directly on the component or by clicking on the component name on the right hand side panel. Business goals and how they were addressed The business goal for this project was promoting the Ergo brand. The solution for this was to ensure that the Ergo brand name was prominently visible throughout the app. Also, by creating a watermark on the image of the furniture, we ensured that users were always aware of the fact that they were working on an Ergo product. UX Design process: The process for designing the app started with interviewing the clients and a few users to get an idea of the business goals and user goals. This was followed by creating the task-flows for the app. Then, we wireframed the task-flows and individual screens for the app. We tested the prototype with some users to ensure that it was easy to use. Finally, the visual design and subsequently, the HTML development of the app was done. The HTML version was converted to the android version and iOS version using PhoneGap api. User Engagement: Since the app was targeted at interior designers and architects, informal one-to-one interviews were held with a few users to understand how they currently communicate their visualizations to their clients. This helped us validate the concept of the app as well as incorporate elements in the app that were relevant for the audience. For example, the terminologies used to indicate the components, color codes and materials were derived from these interviews. Most importantly, we realized that comparing different options was a critical part of communicating different designs. Hence, we incorporated a feature for comparing different customizations created by a user. User feedback was also incorporated in the prototype phase to check whether the app was intuitive enough to be used. This involved sitting down with users and asking them to complete tasks such as customization, saving and comparing. Based on the feedback, incremental taskflow and aesthetic changes were done. For example, a palette button was placed with the theme to enable users to get a quick overview of the color and material palette. Why this project delivers an exceptional user experience and deserves an award? This project delivers an exceptional user experience because it addresses several pain points associated with gesture based interaction such that it makes it extremely easy to use even though some one may not be experienced in using gestures. Also, the task flows and interaction models for customizing the furniture have been tailored to fit small screens and effectively accomplish the task of customization. Little details such as enabling the user to select components in multiple ways and providing quick overviews of the color palette in a theme make for a great user experience because the user is always guided throughout the task. Hence, this excessive care taken in ensuring that the user never feels lost, confused or unsure about how to use the app as well as the design details which smoothly guide the user to complete the task-flows make this app deserving of an award.
