US Army Intelligence Information Warfare Directorate (I2WD)

The primary challenge facing intelligence analysts today is not the shortage of information, but rather the problem of managing and leveraging the volume of information to derive intelligence. The Army’s Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) efforts in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) proved highly successful at gathering raw data, the ever-increasing flood of intelligence far outstripped the ability of intelligence analysts to manually review it as well as the abilities of legacy analytical tools to process it. Even for the data that could be processed, only stove piped systems were available, meaning that analysts had to shift from system to system to find the answers they needed. And even those systems were approaching capacity; it was common for a single query to churn for minutes at a time before producing a response. The Distributed Common Ground System – Army (DCGS-A) Standard Cloud (DSC) solves these problems by providing the means to automatically process all incoming intelligence data for storage in a single location and makes that data available to analysts in a timely manner. To achieve these goals, DSC had three key performance metrics addressing the ingest rate, storage capacity, and query-response performance – these metrics represent at least one order of magnitude improvement over the legacy solution.
