Load Testing for Cloud and Mobile Application Developers

The widespread adoption of cloud-based services has reshaped how developers create applications. Developing applications using platforms of integrated tools housed entirely on the cloud has become the norm. Oftentimes, those applications will see several rapid changes over the course of a single day. The key benefit of this cloud-based ecosystem is straightforward: mobile apps and services can be created and deployed quickly using minimal resources. However, the ecosystem of tools and platforms to support this new development model has failed to keep pace. As a result, many of these applications perform poorly and therefore provide a poor user experience. For business-critical applications, this is unacceptable. Thankfully, the ecosystem of tools is beginning to catch up, primarily by integrating key processes, such as load and performance testing, directly into the PaaS, CMS and web performance offerings they are using for their development process already. Integrating proactive performance testing for cloud-based applications is, in fact, critical to ensuring those applications remain reliable. Application developers require a testing solution that fits the quickening pace of their preferred method of development: the continuous integration model. This means integrating a testing solution into their platform of choice, which is almost always cloud-based. However, traditional testing solutions are simply too costly, too difficult to learn, and, in many cases, require a dedicated performance testing engineer. Most of the testing tools currently available “on the cloud” are little more than repackaged enterprise applications. Dave Kresse, CEO of Mu Dynamics, will explain the importance of integrating performance testing into cloud-based platforms, and which approach is the right one for mobile application developers.
